Well see my problem is I want to play so many different types of characters I don't know which one to pick.
That is one of the "good things"/"problems" with Kanar - There is a lot of customization available to the players. You can have a fighter base class and take all rogue attacks, or a mage base class and go straight for deathstrike. There really isn't anything blocking you from certain abilities except for time. I would suggest creating something that you would like to play as that will help you enjoy your time more.
I don't want to pick something that there is 2 dozen of but I also don't want to pick something so weird that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
Honestly, there is a good range of classes/designs out there. As a first level character you are bound to be exactly like someone else once was, but it is your own personal experiences and interactions that will make you different. For example, I know at least two characters on the field that have the cleric base class and the spell tower to go along with that, but a significant amount of the playerbase believes that they are a couple of generic rogues (minus spells, plus assassinate). It is all in the presentation. Play what you want and make it fun for you.
I almost want to go a see what it is like the first time but it's a long way to drive and not play.
NPC's - Playing these are one of the easiest ways of checking the game out. Offer your time to the GMs and I am sure they can find something for you to do. I brought two of my friends out for their first time to our November event. We played a bunch of throwaway Orc NPCs and they claim to have had a great time - they only played approximately 10 minutes of their character over the course of the weekend. Just remember, you do not need to fight to be able to play or have a good time. You can be some random peasant and just talk with other players/characters if that is all you really want to do. Just make sure to have a decent grasp of the rulebook and you can do quite a bit.
Can I play a character that just uses spells and doesn't even own a weapon?
Yes. As previously stated, make what you want to play. There is no rule stating that you must carry a weapon, or even buy a weapon skill for that line of thinking. Also remember, if you don't have the skill on your sheet, you can't use the weapon (to attack or defend).
Would a druid(cleric) be a good choice for a beginner?
It is up to the player on what is good for them. All classes are good for a beginner as they allow you to custom tailor your character. Make sure to read/understand the rules and there really shouldn't be any major problems.
For example -
a] If you plan on casting spells, you need to make a spellbook. The book must contain your real name, character name, the language it is written in, and the spells you know with their incantations, effects, and other identifying information about them.
b] How you cast these spells is up to you as you can either recite from the book, or from memory.
c] A spell list must be turned in every day you plan on using a spell. The list must contain your real name, character name, date, visual representation of your full spell tower, and the spells you have memorized for the day. I like the daily spell lists that... seem to no longer be available for download. Hmm... I just attempted to place the link here and I can't find them. Oh well... any paper with legible scribble is fine.
Do we have to stay the night? I have some health problems and I would prefer to drive back and forth each day (my internal organs decided to go on strike so I can't eat most foods and I have to sleep in a bed). We would get there early and leave late - that's not an issue.
I sleep in my truck, some people bring tents, some people rent a motel room in Milan, some stay with friends that live nearby, others drive hours to-and-from the field each day. Milan is about 10 minutes (google claims that Big Boys is 11 minutes at speed limit) from the field. If you don't feel like driving a ton (more than 10 mins), nearby food choices include: Arby's, McDonalds, Marco's Pizza, Big Boy, KFC, Taco Bell, Campfire Grill, or you could hit the grocery store or the smaller Sebres market (which is about 1 minute from the field). I completely understand the bed portion - I drive an explorer and made the back of it into a single bed. There are a couple people that bring inflateable mattresses to the field and sleep on those... I only say all of this because there are options that even I didn't know about when I first started playing and wish someone told me about.
As for getting there early and leaving late - The game runs from 5pm Friday to 5pm Sunday. Although there are a handful of players that will stay up until dawn breaks, many of the players start arriving around noon and head out around midnight-2am. An example of my Saturday would be getting on the field by 1030am and farting around the field until the last thing to do is stare at a campfire (usually around 3-4am).
There are plenty of options on what to make, do, and experience. If you like camping, fighting, talking, roleplaying, or playing cards - you can do that. Just make sure to do what you like to do, dress comfortably, and you should have a good time.
Hah, that was a little longer than I had expected when I started typing...
