My brother and I would like to try out Kanar.  Well play a lot of d&d and I have LARPed in a few white wolf games.  How do we get started?  I have read the player information but how do we get a sponsor?

As of right now, we no longer use the sponsorship program.  The best way to get ready for your first event would be to read the rule book, write your character (contact Dan Holland if you need help), work up a character history (you may contact the GM staff, or post questions on the forum if you would like info to help out), contact the econ staff (also the GM’s) to get your starting gear squared away and then contacting the PM staff with any questions you have as far as rules and to set up a good time to come out to the field to get your practical tests completed.

This forum is a very good resource for any questions you may have regarding the rules, setting and so on.  Feel free to ask questions.

To new eyes it may seem like quite a bit of work, but it really isn't that bad.

If you want to be ultra prepared and make the on-field process as fast as possible:
1]  Go to Kanar.org and in the menu on the left side of the screen, click...
* Player Information --> Game Rules  and then all 4 links to download the rulebooks and other useful information.
* Familiar Faces and take a look at those people.  They are somewhat important and will be the ones you need to see to get things started.
2]  Read the rulebook, as well as the "Common Knowledge", "K1 Players Quick Guide".
3]  Read the rulebook again.
4]  Attempt to answer the questions in the "KGE K1 Player History" that are found in the New Player Information section and create your character.
5]  Shoot out emails to -
* Character to Dan Holland/Character Book Director (cbd@kanar.org)
* History to Jeff Harvey/GM Staff (GMstaff@kanar.org) - The KGE K1 Player History sheet tells you to send it to Dave Zolnoski, but I do not believe he is the K1 Historian any longer... so ship it to Jeff and he will make sure it gets to the correct person.
6]  Read the rulebook again.
7A]  Come to an event (please make sure to read the rulebook before you reach this point) to -
7B]  Visit the Staff Tent -
* Get certified for combat by sparring/fighting with one of the Playmaster Staff (Robin Trombley, Travis Hamill, Steve Jones, myself, and I think there are a couple others).
* Get your starting gear (I believe you get something like 3 gold to spend on starting gear and can walk on field with 5 silver) from acting Econ staff.
* Take your combat and magic tests so that you can use the fancy skills on your character sheet.
7C]  Have fun playing.

Honestly, it isn't that bad though.  Most people just read the rulebook, get an idea of the character they want to make and show up on Friday/Saturday to get things started.  If there is only 1-2 people getting started that haven't prepared anything, the process shouldn't take terribly long (maybe an hour depending on how long it takes you to answer a 32 question test), but the past couple events provided a fair number of new faces that it would be best to get the process started early as some things can bottleneck easily (such as character creation, getting starting gear, and grading/discussing the tests).

Also, as Jeff said, you do not really need to worry about a sponsor, but veteran members are very valuable assets in getting to know the in's and out's of the game.  I am sure anyone on the staff (as well as a vast majority of the playerbase) would be more than willing to help out with whatever questions you may have - don't feel too awkward or bad for asking any questions as the only bad questions are the ones that go unanswered.

Well see my problem is I want to play so many different types of characters I don't know which one to pick.  I don't want to pick something that there is 2 dozen of but I also don't want to pick something so weird that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  I almost want to go a see what it is like the first time but it's a long way to drive and not play.  Should a make a couple characters and then ask a GM which one is best?  Can I play a character that just uses spells and doesn't even own a weapon?  What style of clothing would be best (I have TONS of renaissance festival clothing and won a few costume contests for a few of them including a nobility outfit)?  Should I make sure it can take a beating or just make sure pieces don't fall off?  Would a druid(cleric) be a good choice for a beginner?

Do we have to stay the night?  I have some health problems and I would prefer to drive back and forth each day (my internal organs decided to go on strike so I can't eat most foods and I have to sleep in a bed).  We would get there early and leave late - that's not an issue.

Should a make a couple characters and then ask a GM which one is best?  If you like, sure.

Can I play a character that just uses spells and doesn't even own a weapon?  Yes

What style of clothing would be best (I have TONS of renaissance festival clothing and won a few costume contests for a few of them including a nobility outfit)?  Most Kanar players do a mix of European peasant and merchant garb from the 1200s to 1700s.  We also have some gypsies, barbarians and high fantasy elves, dwarves and "other".

Should I make sure it can take a beating or just make sure pieces don't fall off?  It is a forest near a swamp, so I encourage durability and something that can be easily cleaned.

Would a druid(cleric) be a good choice for a beginner? Yes

Do we have to stay the night?

To pick up the spare from Craig:

no, you don't have to camp.  Currently, most players don't, though we're trying to encourage them to do so.  However, your health is certainly more important.

You can arrive and leave whenever you like, though if you have business with the staff and plan to show up at an odd hour, it is best to email us and let us know so we can make arrangements to take care of you what you need.

Well see my problem is I want to play so many different types of characters I don't know which one to pick.

That is one of the "good things"/"problems" with Kanar - There is a lot of customization available to the players.  You can have a fighter base class and take all rogue attacks, or a mage base class and go straight for deathstrike.  There really isn't anything blocking you from certain abilities except for time.  I would suggest creating something that you would like to play as that will help you enjoy your time more.

I don't want to pick something that there is 2 dozen of but I also don't want to pick something so weird that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Honestly, there is a good range of classes/designs out there.  As a first level character you are bound to be exactly like someone else once was, but it is your own personal experiences and interactions that will make you different.  For example, I know at least two characters on the field that have the cleric base class and the spell tower to go along with that, but a significant amount of the playerbase believes that they are a couple of generic rogues (minus spells, plus assassinate).  It is all in the presentation.  Play what you want and make it fun for you.

I almost want to go a see what it is like the first time but it's a long way to drive and not play.

NPC's - Playing these are one of the easiest ways of checking the game out.  Offer your time to the GMs and I am sure they can find something for you to do.  I brought two of my friends out for their first time to our November event.  We played a bunch of throwaway Orc NPCs and they claim to have had a great time - they only played approximately 10 minutes of their character over the course of the weekend.  Just remember, you do not need to fight to be able to play or have a good time.  You can be some random peasant and just talk with other players/characters if that is all you really want to do.  Just make sure to have a decent grasp of the rulebook and you can do quite a bit.

Can I play a character that just uses spells and doesn't even own a weapon?

Yes.  As previously stated, make what you want to play.  There is no rule stating that you must carry a weapon, or even buy a weapon skill for that line of thinking.  Also remember, if you don't have the skill on your sheet, you can't use the weapon (to attack or defend).

Would a druid(cleric) be a good choice for a beginner?

It is up to the player on what is good for them.  All classes are good for a beginner as they allow you to custom tailor your character.  Make sure to read/understand the rules and there really shouldn't be any major problems.

For example -
a] If you plan on casting spells, you need to make a spellbook.  The book must contain your real name, character name, the language it is written in, and the spells you know with their incantations, effects, and other identifying information about them.
b] How you cast these spells is up to you as you can either recite from the book, or from memory.
c] A spell list must be turned in every day you plan on using a spell.  The list must contain your real name, character name, date, visual representation of your full spell tower, and the spells you have memorized for the day.  I like the daily spell lists that... seem to no longer be available for download.  Hmm... I just attempted to place the link here and I can't find them.  Oh well... any paper with legible scribble is fine.

Do we have to stay the night?  I have some health problems and I would prefer to drive back and forth each day (my internal organs decided to go on strike so I can't eat most foods and I have to sleep in a bed).  We would get there early and leave late - that's not an issue.

I sleep in my truck, some people bring tents, some people rent a motel room in Milan, some stay with friends that live nearby, others drive hours to-and-from the field each day.  Milan is about 10 minutes (google claims that Big Boys is 11 minutes at speed limit) from the field.  If you don't feel like driving a ton (more than 10 mins), nearby food choices include: Arby's, McDonalds, Marco's Pizza, Big Boy, KFC, Taco Bell, Campfire Grill, or you could hit the grocery store or the smaller Sebres market (which is about 1 minute from the field).  I completely understand the bed portion - I drive an explorer and made the back of it into a single bed.  There are a couple people that bring inflateable mattresses to the field and sleep on those... I only say all of this because there are options that even I didn't know about when I first started playing and wish someone told me about.

As for getting there early and leaving late - The game runs from 5pm Friday to 5pm Sunday.  Although there are a handful of players that will stay up until dawn breaks, many of the players start arriving around noon and head out around midnight-2am.  An example of my Saturday would be getting on the field by 1030am and farting around the field until the last thing to do is stare at a campfire (usually around 3-4am).

There are plenty of options on what to make, do, and experience.  If you like camping, fighting, talking, roleplaying, or playing cards - you can do that.  Just make sure to do what you like to do, dress comfortably, and you should have a good time.

Hah, that was a little longer than I had expected when I started typing...

Wow.. that is some great information!  I know I have to bring my own food (I can't eat at restaurants) but I don't think that's a problem.. I just have to prepare and pack a lot.  I am sure my brother and I can make some characters we would want to play.  When does the first event of the season usually start?

Well, there is one small event left this year - Tomorrow (Dec 19).  It is only a one-day long event.  I believe it starts around noon and ends when people leave (most-likely when it gets dark).

I believe the 2010 schedule looks like...
01/23/10 = one
03/19/10 = three
04/23/10 = three
05/21/10 = three
06/18/10 = ten
07/23/10 = three
08/20/10 = three
09/24/10 = three
10/22/10 = three
11/19/10 = three

Where one, three, and ten are the number of days long the event is...

The first weekend event usually starts in March, and they are also usually on the third weekend of the month.

The event on 1/23/10 is the winter feast,  one day events are usually for current players only, the Character Book Director may not be there to register a new character.
Later,

Fred

Fred Sher - "...one day events are usually for current players only, the Character Book Director may not be there to register a new character."

As KGE President, I agree with Fred's statement.  One day events are in my opinion the "staff's" day off.  Usually the GM 1st sets up and executes the days activities and the rest of the members just play.

It is also worthy to note that the March and April events generally have less bug issues as we do play in a mosquito infested swamp land.

Feel free to contact me if you reach any road blocks.
